About Lake Worth, Florida:Early History:
In 1911 Harold Bryant and William Greenwood purchased the much of the town of Jewel from the widow of a former slave and changed its name to the Townsite of Lucerne. A year later, as plans were being laid for a waterfront city, the name was once again changed to Lake Worth when it was discovered that Florida already had another town named Lucerne. Lake Avenue became the first true road through town, and a dock was built at its foot to accomodate commerce on the Intracoastal Waterway. Bryant Park was laid out around this time and is still enjoyed by the citizens of Lake Worth today. A study of the city's original survey shows that it provided for 7000 lots connected by 55 miles of streets and nearly the same distance in alleys.
Life in Lake Worth was colorful in those early days. The Town Marshall, J.O. King, was very strict about enforcing the town's 8mph speed limit on its seven motorcars. He also, reportedly, liked to fish with a shotgun. The first school was an entirely wooden structure covering approximately 1000 sq.ft. Mr. Regal, Lake Worth's first barber, sat his customers down on his barber's chair - which was actually just a soapbox - before clipping their hair. In addition to 308 residents, the 1912 census recorded Lake Worth's population of fowls as being exactly 876.
1913 saw the arrival of a proper city government, the Lake Worth Bathhouse, and the Lake Worth Light, Water, and Ice Company. Work began on the Florida Hotel. The fire department obtained a six hundred pound bell. Kerosene lamps lit Lake Avenue while Lake Worth waited for a power plant to be built. A ferry ride across the Intracoastal to the beach cost five cents. The following year a municipal building was constructed that served as city hall but also contained two jail cells. This foresight paid off in 1917 when the jail received its first occupant.
The 1920's brought about much more development in Lake Worth including a wooden toll bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway, the Lake Worth Casino, the Oakley Playhouse (site of the current Lake Worth Playhouse), the Lake Worth Golf Course, elementary and high schools, and a fire station. Unfortunately a hurricane in 1928 destroyed much of the city.
Over the years other notable improvements became part of the city including the art deco Lake Theatre in 1939 which now houses the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Lake Worth Pier in 1954.
